Hundreds of grassroots physical activity and sport projects are in the running for a prestigious London Sport Award after close to 300 submissions were received from across the capital.
Entries were received from projects operating across all 33 of London’s boroughs.
It means this year’s Awards mark the first occasion in the event’s five-year history where activity from across the whole city will be in the running as a panel of industry experts seek to draw up shortlists for the London Sport Awards 2020, supported by the City of London Corporation.
Each Awards category will have three shortlisted nominees who will be invited to the glittering Awards ceremony at the Guildhall on Friday 6 March where the winners will be announced at the biggest celebration of grassroots physical activity and sport in the capital.
The judging panel will meet on Friday 17 January and will include the chair of the London Sport Board Jillian Moore and the organisation’s Director of Insight, Technology and Data Tim Copley.
The pair will be joined by nine further judges with Athletics with Disability Lead at London Marathon Michelle Weltman returning to the panel alongside 2019 Volunteer of the Year winner Franck Batimba.
Charlotte Lawrence, Head of Sport Participation at the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and Greater London Authority's Sport Project Manager, Kerri Atherton, are also on the panel alongside UK Sport Association Chief Executive Tracey McCillen.
Awards sponsor The City of London Corporation will be represented on the judging panel by Karina Dostalova while United Borders’ founder Justin Finlayson will also make his first appearance as a London Sport Awards judge.
ukactive’s Head of Marketing and Communication Rob Gibson and Chelsea and England footballer Anita Asante complete the judging panel line-up.
Nearly two-thirds of the nominations (63%) came from nominees who were submitting for the first time demonstrating the exciting new developments in the capital’s physical activity and sport landscape over the past year.
Tim Copley, London Sport Director of Insight, Technology and Data, and member of the Awards judging panel said:
“It is fantastic to see so many, and such a vast range of projects, that are helping Londoners across the city to be more active, put forward for recognition at the London Sport Awards.
“Nominations for the London Sport Awards are always of an extremely high standard and I’m expecting some really difficult decisions for the entire judging panel in selecting our final shortlists.
“The Awards ceremony is always a fantastic occasion and I have no doubt that this year, with so many deserving nominees and hosted at such a phenomenal London landmark, it will be even better once again.”
